MEET THE ARTISTS:
Eudes de Santana
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP: I was born and raised in a small town in Brazil called Rio Claro. It’s in the São Paulo city area, where I would say I culturally grew up indeed. I moved to Londrina, southern Brazil, then Barcelona, Spain, then Berlin, Germany, where I’m based at the moment.
WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY: When I was studying graphic design in the university. Photography seemed to be the best way for me to express myself plus it is something that allows me to be in touch with different people and places rather than work mostly in an office and having a regular routine.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU: Being surrounded by people I care about, music, art, and running
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE IMAGE THAT YOU'VE TAKEN: I like all my abstract images, i.e. the coloured smokes, but couldn’t say I have a favourite.
WHAT ARE ONE OR TWO OF YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM PAST SHOOTS: Once I was on location about to start a week long shoot with a big crew, when I slipped into a big mud puddle before the very first shot. That was very embarrassing for me but made everyone on set have a big laugh, break the ice then chill and have a great time together during the whole week.
IF YOU WEREN'T A PHOTOGRAPHER WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD: I have a BA in graphic design, so I would probably be working in a design studio or in an advertising agency, both areas that I tried when I was still in university.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE HISTORICAL FIGURE: Photography related I would say William Eggleston.
WHAT SONG GETS STUCK IN YOUR HEAD MOST OFTEN: Lately, Black Russian of DVS1, but Last Chance for a Slow Dance of Fugazi is one of those songs I have for life.
WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL: Any cat.
WHAT IS THE ONE ITEM OF CLOTHING THAT YOU WEAR MOST OFTEN: I wear black 99% of the time, so anything in black would fit.
WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING YOU'VE EVER DONE: Move back from Berlin to Sao Paulo to support my dad to fight against a serious illness. I had recently moved to Berlin, was in love with the city and growing my career in a way that I was very happy with but all of a sudden I felt the need to be back home with my family. I spent a bit more than one year there, he got cured and recovered, so I felt ready to move back to Germany again. I rather think that this was one of those really bad things that happen to you to make you stronger.
WHEN'S THE LAST TIME YOU LAUGHED SO HARD IT HURT: The last weekend, hanging out with friends. I love them.
WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TALENT: It won’t be a secret anymore if I tell it here!
WHAT IS YOUR GO-TO DANCE MOVE: I really enjoy dancing for hours, like marathons. Nothing super special or different though, but if I’m out, I’m on the dance floor for sure. I avoid going out and listening to stuff I’m not into though.
WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR: A few old rolls of film. I generally don’t keep them there, but sometimes when I buy some special ones, I try to take care of them well, so I keep them in the fridge.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO UNWIND AFTER A BUSY DAY: If I’m not too tired, hang out with people I like, but when it’s after a very long and exhausting day, just sleep is fine.
