MEET THE ARTIST:

David Cabrera

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP: I’m a first-generation Cuban American, born and raised in Miami, FL.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY: Growing up rap album covers are what first drew me to photography.

I however didn’t start making my own photos until around 2003, when I bought a camera to make content for a blog I had at the time. Since then I rarely leave the house without having one with me.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU: The music, latin culture, colors and light of Miami have always been big inspirations for me. I have been living in New York for the last seven years, but go back every chance I get.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE IMAGE THAT YOU'VE TAKEN: It’s so hard to pick, but I have been photographing my grandparents for the last two years and there’s a portrait of them that is really special to me.

WHAT ARE ONE OR TWO OF YOUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM PAST SHOOTS: Being in the studio with Pharrell and watching him make a beat and then a song from scratch was incredible.

I also photographed Young Thug in Atlanta in 2021 while he finished his album. He had turned a mansion into his studio and was asking that everyone around him always be wearing all white. He even covered the whole exterior of the house and yard in fake snow.

IF YOU WEREN'T A PHOTOGRAPHER WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING INSTEAD: I always wished I could be a drummer in a band.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE HISTORICAL FIGURE: Allen Iverson

WHAT SONG GETS STUCK IN YOUR HEAD MOST OFTEN: Burbujas de Amor by Juan Luis Guerra. I sing it out loud all day every day.

WHAT IS YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL: A Dolphin

IF YOU COULD ONLY EAT ONE FOOD FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE: My grandmother Titi’s white rice and black beans.

WHAT IS THE ONE ITEM OF CLOTHING THAT YOU WEAR MOST OFTEN: A blank New Era fitted hat from the 1970s that I found deadstock.

WHAT WOULD THE TITLE OF YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY BE: Something Out of Nothing

WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING YOU'VE EVER DONE: Become a photographer.

WHAT IS YOUR SECRET TALENT: I’m pretty good on a basketball court.

WHAT IS YOUR GO TO DANCE MOVE: I used to think that I could do the Harlem Shake back in the day, but I probably truly couldn't.

WHAT IS THE STRANGEST THING IN YOUR REFRIGERATOR: My entire refrigerator is a strange and mostly empty place. There’s film in there though.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO UNWIND AFTER A BUSY DAY: A glass (or two) of Sancerre usually does the trick.
