MEET THE ARTIST:

Mieko Takahashi

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
I grew up in Kobe, Japan—a beautiful city nestled between the mountains and the ocean, known for its incredible bakeries and pastry shops. I lived near a lovely park and library where I spent so much time reading everything from literature to how-to books on baking, cooking, and knitting. Japanese cookbooks and craft books are truly special—I still bring home as many as I can every time I visit.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST BECOME INTERESTED IN FOOD/BEVERAGE/PROP STYLING?
I first discovered food styling through a photographer friend, who introduced me to a stylist I could assist. I had always loved cooking and baking, but didn’t even know styling was a career. Once I found it, I was completely hooked. My background in design, years of baking, and experience as a pastry chef all came together naturally—I feel incredibly lucky to do what I do now.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Nature, art, and everyday moments—walking through the city, discovering great food, and cooking at home. I love exploring farmers markets, grocery stores, and shops of all kinds. Traveling and finding new restaurants always sparks ideas. I’m also inspired by tending to my plants, arranging flowers at home, and collaborating with talented people. The possibilities of what I can create are endlessly exciting to me.

WHAT SONG GETS STUCK IN YOUR HEAD MOST OFTEN?
“Plastic Love,” lately.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ANIMAL?
Dogs and cats—but really, I love all animals. Baby animals especially, and I have a soft spot for Baby Punch.

IF YOU COULD ONLY EAT ONE FOOD FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Pasta… as long as I can change the sauce!

WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING YOU'VE EVER DONE?
Raising a child. She’s 20 now—beautiful, wise, and thankfully much easier these days.

WHEN'S THE LAST TIME YOU LAUGHED SO HARD IT HURT?
Last month, while traveling in Thailand with a friend.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO UNWIND AFTER A BUSY DAY?
A long bath by candlelight.
